WOW! A month of school has FLOWN by!! As usual, we are busy in the music room. This year students have music for 50 minutes every 5 days (instead of 2 days a week @ 30 min.). This has been a big change for me, but I think I will like it once I get the hang of longer class times - and the kids should benefit as well. With a rotating schedule like this, students will have an equal amount of time in music, art, PE, and computers. Theoretically, no class should get behind in their lessons. Here's what is happening for the remainder of 1st quarter. 4th grade: RECORDERS!!! We are having fun learning the proper way to play this flute-like instrument, and I think the kids are really enjoying it. If your child doesn't have a recorder yet, please send me a note so that we can get one to them. Playing Orff instruments is another new experience for many 4th graders. It is such a joy to see the kids really "get into" the music!! We have also been learning lots about rounds, texture, and counting rhythms using quarter notes, half notes, whole notes and quarter rests. 4th graders will continue to work on recorder skills and rhythm reading. In October we will begin a unit on form that is always lots of fun because we incorporate lots of movement. You might ask your student about the "Bat Dance" :-)
5th grade: RECORDERS!!! After a quick review of the notes we learned in 4th grade, 5th graders will really take off and learn to play several more notes in rapid succession. Your student MUST remember his recorder on music day. We are using them every day, and I don't want anyone to get behind. 5th graders are also doing lots with the Orff Instruments - working on accompaniments to African and safari songs. The kids love playing these instruments along with the drums :-). 5th graders are becoming quite proficient counting rhythms using quarter notes/rests and eighth notes. These can be tricky, and I am so proud of their progress. In October we will be learning about form in music with some fun songs that use lots of movement. I can't wait!
